Services
- First phase, 36 best-performing learners in science and technology were selected from Grade 10 among various rural schools from Mkondo municipality (Mpumalanga) to participate in the program.
- The minimum requirements for selection is a pass mark of 54% in Grade 9, 56% in Grade 10, 58% in Grade 11 and 60% in Grade 12.
- The selected learners undergo a 1 week intensive bush camp program to unlearn so that they embrace the new culture.
- Periodic workshops are organized with various speakers to motivate, inform, educate and inspire the learners for excellence through hope.
- Organize activities such as debates, educational tours and outings to continue building a strong character.
- Facilitate opportunities for scholarships and bursaries for higher educational studies.
- Monitor and address the basic needs of the learners so that a conducive learning environment is enhanced.
- Facilitate timeous and smooth enrolment with tertiary institutions.
- Assist them in securing vacation work for experiential learning
- Determine with the beneficiaries the futuristic value they plan to deliver to their places of origin to respond to rural development needs.
- Arrange for student exchange programs for global exposure.
Program Activities for secondary schools:
Milestones:
- From 2014 till present SAASTA has supported the Foundation’s initiative by sending graduated Interns/Volunteers from the fields of Science, Engineering and Technology. The interns serve the Foundation as Mathematical and Science tutors and program coordinators for the Leadership program.
- We hosted a motivational speech day on the 15th of August 2015 at Piet Retief, Mpumalanga. The learners learned the important of commitment to their studies, career guidance, university requirements and bursaries information. This motivation speech day helped to expose many learners to other elements such as peer pressure, the relationship between poverty and education. Motivational day served as preparation mechanism for learners on their September Trial Examinations.
- The foundation secured a sponsor for Internet connection to Sinethemba High school. The learners were also given data enabled mobile phones that were donated during fundraising gala dinner. The function was graced by the presence of the Honourable Mpumalanga MEC for education; Ms Regina Mhaule, on 2 October 2014.
- Hosted Fundraising gala dinner on 28 June 2014 at Sasol. The Foundation managed to secure sponsors who donated money and mobile phones to the beneficiaries.
- The foundation was officially appointed agent by SAASTA to participate in National Science Week on 4 August- 9 August 2014.
- Implemented a Leadership Program for the beneficiaries, on 14 October 2013.
- Hosted Self-discovery and Understanding Science, Engineering and Technology Workshop, on 5 October 2013 at Mondi Science centre.
- Hosted Black Business Workshop, on 13 July 2013, for awareness and support of local business at Piet Retief Guest House.
- Tour of SCI -BONO Discovery Centre by the beneficiaries, on 26 October 2012.
- Business breakfast session - Role of Business in Accelerating Rural Development, on 26 October 2012.
Skills development and training to unemployed youth:
- Ongoing discussion with different seta skills development and training centers to assist the foundation with training of the Jozini ( Kwa-Zulu Natal) youth, who are unemployed and have no skills or a formal education.
